9 favorite activities of campsites and motorhomes

Real RVers tell us what their favorite resort and camping activities are…

People love camping for different reasons. Some like to explore new places while hiking, while others enjoy napping or reading a book in their favorite travel hammock.

The good thing is that there is no shortage of camping activities that you can enjoy in a motorhome.

If you are camping or camping in a more rural location, you can participate in quiet activities in nature. Or you can stay at a campground or resort that offers many different activities!

Recently, one of our Facebook RV Lifestyle members named Mary posed a great question to our group. She asked:

“What activities do you enjoy most at campgrounds/resorts?”

Of course, our RV Lifestyle members gave him plenty of great ideas on what they like to do while traveling. The post has passed 150 comments!

9 favorite activities of campsites and motorhomes

Here is a list of the different camping activities that our RV Lifestyle Facebook Group likes to take advantage of nearby campgrounds and RV resorts.

If you already have your favorite camping activities, see if you’ve made a list of them. Otherwise, you may have more ideas for fun things you can do as you venture out in your RV.

1. Aquatic activities

Many resorts offer different water activities on their properties. They include pools, hot tubs and lazy rivers and they were one of the most mentioned activities in the reviews.

During the hot summer temperatures, a dip in the pool can be really refreshing. Billy commented: “I would say now, the pool.”

When it’s hot and sticky outside, nothing is more refreshing than a dip in the pool, especially if you’ve done something active in the morning like a hike or a game of pickleball.

In addition to sitting or floating in a pool, many resorts offer water aerobics classes. They may include water exercise classes or pool volleyball.

2. Sports activities

Kayaking Fishing Camping Activities

I know that swimming and other water activities are a type of sport. But many respondents said they enjoyed other types of sports activities. They include sand volleyball, pickleballfishing, kayaking, hiking and biking.

You can participate in different sports activities across the country, no matter where you are. Many people also like to combine their adventures. For example, they like to fish from their kayak (I’m addicted to kayak fishing!).

Another sport mentioned by Randy is golf, and many agreed with him. Some of the swankier resorts have golf courses attached to their grounds. Just beware that they come with a high price overnight.

Also, many people love nature photography. It also suits many of these sports. You can hike or bike to a cool spot to get shots you couldn’t capture otherwise.

3. Visits

Many people like motorhomes because they can see a lot of new things whether they are driving or parked.

You can choose to stay in a campground inside a national park so you have easy access to amazing sites. If you do, just be aware that these parks can get very crowded in high season. For most parks, this is from May to October, depending on its location.

RV Lifestyle member Shanna said she enjoys “tubing on (the) river”. Although it is a sporting activity, it is also a fun way to visit different areas or parks.

Yosemite National Park in California is a great place to go tubing and take in all the wondrous beauty of the park. Other states across the country have similar setups.

4. Enjoy peace and quiet

Many of our members responded with different variations of liking peace and quiet.

A humorous response came from Tim. He said he liked “people not asking me questions.” Sure, he was funny, but a lot of people appreciate the quiet solitude that camping can bring.

Charlie supported this idea. He said he likes to “listen to the birds and not the children” when he travels.

Sounds like Charlie would enjoy the 55+ campgrounds.

5. Reading

10 best books to read while camping

Another activity that many people have mentioned that doesn’t come straight from a campground or resort is reading. But since so many of our members have suggested it, I’m including it in this list.

It seems like a lot of people like to take a good book when camping. They can sit back in their zero gravity chair, put their feet up, and dive into a story.

All they need is a comfortable campsite with a great view!

If you agree, you should check out the 10 best books to read while camping.

6. Dine at local restaurants

Best RV Camping in Wine Country

Another fun activity doesn’t necessarily take place inside the campsite or resort (but it can!). Many people enjoy trying new restaurants in the city they are visiting.

One member, Mary, said she enjoys visiting “local breweries, wineries and restaurants.” Jennifer and I are the same!

Maybe she’ll meet fellow RV Lifestyle member Luke, who says his “favorite activity is drinking tequila.” His answer is humorous, but a lot of people like to try different (responsibly) adult drinks on offer around town.

Many states have wine routes, microbreweries, or distilleries that you can check out if you like to do that sort of thing. If this is your cup of tea (or rather a glass of wine), I recommend the following:

7. Relaxation

Campsite activities

Many of our members have said they like to relax when camping. So all they want from a campground is a nice place to stretch out and enjoy nature. That, and a nice place to visit with family and friends.

Many people like not having to stick to a schedule when they travel. It allows them to decide what they want to do, when they want to do it.

Many others have included the happiness that a campfire brings.

One member, named Janis, said she liked: “Quiet neighbours, space between sites. Possibility of making a campfire.

Another member, Heather, said she loved “sitting around the fire with nice people chatting all night”.

I also like to sit around a campfire, especially if we also enjoy Easy Campfire Snacks & Treats.

8. Socialization

Socializing is another big draw for people camping. Countless members have said they enjoy meeting other travelers or sitting around a fire to chat with other people.

Camping offers a relaxing way to socialize with other people who also enjoy being in nature.

I know meeting new people can cause some people anxiety. If this is your case, I recommend that you read How to make friends while camping.

9. Other amenities

Many people mentioned specific camping amenities rather than activities. I think they are definitely worth mentioning.

Many campgrounds and resorts offer convenient amenities to help make your trip a little smoother.

They often mentioned places with laundry facilities and showers. These definitely come in handy after all the swimming, sports, relaxing, and campfire activities you enjoy! Just be sure to follow your campsite’s laundry etiquette.
