RAPID CITY, SD — Rapid City police officers often spend their days patrolling the city, but sometimes. they can be found spending a few hours of their time on the courts and grounds of local schools.

The Rapid City Police Activities League, or PAL, has continued to grow in recent years.

“In 2018, it all started and we felt like the kids needed something to do during the summer nights, so we started the basketball program,” says RCPD PAL Vice President , Sgt. Mathieu James.

They added many other activities to the original basketball program.

“You get these one-to-one relationships with the kids,” the sergeant said. James adds. “You show them that there are people not only within their family, but in the community who want to spend time with them and care about them.”

Officers noted that offering after-school activities created positive changes throughout the day.

“I also work as a School Resource Officer, and a lot of our issues that we have in schools will either happen before, or during transition periods, or at the end of school,” says Nick Strampe, President of RCPD PAL. “So if we’re giving these positive outlets, it’s just another way of making sure we’re giving the kids something to do, they don’t go out and maybe get bored and find something less positive.

During flag football, the RCPD partnered with the South Dakota School of Mines football team, which included additional “friends” in the PAL.

“Really, Kyante is the one who kind of started all of this for our school, getting into all of this with the police department…and, you know, he talked to me a little bit about it and I talked to our coaches and it’s really something that’s been interesting for me and I was pretty excited to start coming here,” said SD Mines Football quarterback Jayden Johannsen. “It’s been a blast.”

The Mines students said they loved becoming the leaders they would like to have and be able to play like kids again.

“You come here and, you know, you get into the roots of the game where… it’s not Xs and O’s, it’s just for fun,” the SD Mines defensive end and linebacker said. Kyante Christian. “You know, I think that’s something we miss a lot. And… just going back to our roots and having fun, playing with the kids.

RCPD Police Activities League“You don’t have to worry about, you know, being a student,” adds Johannsen. “You have a lot of lessons, tests and things to worry about besides playing football. But, you know, here you can kind of let it go and hang out with the kids.

The fun doesn’t stop at flag football, next up is mountain biking.

“We’ll be doing simple trails along M HILL and bike paths and we’ll have fun things for the kids to do,” says Sgt. James.

You can find more information about upcoming events and future PAL events on the PALRapid City Facebook page.

Despite the fasting month of Ramadan, sports activities are on the rise in Kashmir. Athletes devise ways to train and achieve peak performance during the holy month, as fasting from sunrise to sunset lasts about 15 hours a day.

Abdul Majid Hurray of Goshbugh Pattan, a cricket tournament organizer, said that they are currently organizing the 5th Ali Memorial Casco Ball T10 Cricket Tournament, especially in the month of Ramadan, in which around 65 teams participate.

“There is no decline in sports activities even during Ramadan. Even though they remain fast, the sportsmen continue to play with vigor and enthusiasm,” he said.

Cricketer Adil Kachru, 23, of Kanipora Shopian, in a chat with Rising Kashmir, said he had been playing cricket for 11 years on an alternate basis during the fast. “We play matches every other day during the fasting month of Ramadan,” he said.

Kachru added that the first few days things seemed difficult “but little by little you are getting used to the new regime. There seems to be a divine push during fasting that helps overcome challenges,” he said.

When it comes to changing schedules or managing food during the month of Ramadan, Kachru said that one should take plenty of dates and eggs to meet the body’s needs.

“We eat enough dates and eggs at Iftari time because we cannot consume food during daytime fasting. So the focus remains on a high-protein diet,” did he declare.

Talking about his daily sporting involvement with different teams this season, he said he has been playing for many clubs and cricket teams in the valley.

Ali Sports Academy coach and Padma Shri award winner, Faisal Ali said during Ramadan that they organize events after sports activities. They organize Quran recitation (Qirat contest), Islamic quizzes and Naat contests during the month of Ramadan.

“We organize Iftar parties for the winners and the winners organize Iftari with orphans,” he said.

“In addition, we run community career counseling sessions for children, especially for the poor, although the younger ones also do drills and workouts,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Mountain Bike Association Chairman Riyaz Wani said that usually during Ramadan, training sessions for outdoor sports activities have to be postponed or some light exercises are done during of this holy month.

“Athletes do light workouts, warm-ups, strength exercises either one hour before breaking the fast (Iftar) or one hour after Iftar,” he said, adding that he trains himself. -even for an hour after sunset meals.

Arifa Bilal, a record-breaking weightlifter and trainer, said that during the month of Ramadan, they usually do strength exercises and avoid cardio exercises as it causes more sweating, which eventually leads to thirst.

“We take protein and other necessary diet for Sehri and Iftar, although food intake is diminished due to Ramadan fasting,” she said.

Famous Urdu commentator from Kashmir Valley, Nasir Dar said: “We are addicted to commentaries. But, during the month of fasting, it is a daunting task to comment.

“But when you have a passion for the game, it makes it easier,” he said.

Nasir said the love of the game and the excitement on the pitch lifts spirits. “When the players on the pitch can give their 100%, why not me? This is what comes to mind when I see sportsmen playing hard and with commitment even during this month of fasting,” he added.

From playing or listening to music and enjoying activities on the area’s lakes and rivers, to volunteering and attending the multitude of events held downtown and at sites in the area, there are endless ways to enjoy Tahlequah and the surrounding area.

Shop for vegetables, honey, and birdhouses at the Tahlequah Farmers’ Market; play a concert on the Illinois River or at a local club or restaurant; walks or jaunts through a hiking and biking trail – the recreational possibilities are endless.

Tahlequah offers something for everyone. Local musicians play in a number of venues throughout the year, from a bar to a tank operator. They play indoors and outdoors, depending on the weather. Local artists play country and rock ‘n’ roll, as well as Red Dirt, reggae, gospel and jazz, topped off with the annual Jazz Fest in the spring.

In the summer, the River City Players – which brings together professionals and students – offer exceptional music and dance performances. Northeastern State University also offers live theater through the Theater Department and the Sequoyah Institute.

River City principal and teacher Robyn Pursley said the most important thing for people to know about their activities is that everything is open to the public and all drama and Sequoyah Institute productions are free to students at the USN. They offer a children’s theater production each season.

“For RCP, this season we present ‘Vinyl Classics: Country and Rock ‘n’ Roll.’ What people should know about RCP is that it’s been an NSU tradition since 1983, and thousands of customers join us every summer from all over the country. We have artists on stage from all over the state and the country and we have a live band on stage at every show,” Pursley said.

The shows run from June 16 to July 23, Thursday to Saturday. The box office number is 919-444-4500 or tickets are on sale online at goriverhawkstickets.com.

Various art courses are offered throughout the year by the Cherokee Art Center, Tahlequah Arts Council, Continuing Education at NSU, and Tahlequah Creates.

A plethora of volunteer opportunities are available for those looking to make a difference, from fun to serious. Most volunteers will agree that they get more than they ever imagined by giving back and that they often learn new skills or hobbies.

The CARE Pantry schedules volunteers about once a month to help stock shelves or assist customers. Habitat for Humanity builds homes to help people, including a Women Build project. Like most volunteer groups, they will train volunteers who may start with little building skills and teach whatever they want to learn.

Linda Cheatham, executive director of Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity since July 2009, said Habitat’s vision is that everyone deserves decent, affordable housing.

“In Cherokee County, one in six people spend more than half of their income on housing, leaving little left over for food, medicine and utilities,” Cheatham said.

To qualify for an affordable Habitat home, the applicant must have a credit score of 640 or higher, a steady job to pay off a mortgage, be willing to partner with Habitat to complete sweat equity, and not be a registered sex offender.

Founded in 1990, TAHFH is currently building House 31. By building with volunteers under the supervision of a construction supervisor, the cost is greatly reduced. The selected and qualified owner pays only the cost and not the market value.

To become a volunteer, go to the site, www.tahlequahhabitat.org and register to work. No skill or experience is necessary. To generate funds for building homes, TAHFH has opened two ReStores that accept donations from the public and then sell these items at low prices. The ReStore Home Improvement store is located at 17165 W. Mud Valley Road and the ReStore Rack Clothing store is located at 198 W. First St.

Help In Crisis is a non-profit organization that annually sponsors the Walk A Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser where local men put on their stiletto heels and literally walk a mile. Help In Crisis provides support to people experiencing domestic violence, and its goal is to break the cycle of violence for victims and their children through transformational care that aims to educate and empower, with a vision of a community where peace prevails.

Brad Eubanks has just participated in his 12th year of participation in Walk A Mile.

“It’s super important to a lot of us, especially me personally. When I first heard about this, the first thing I thought of was the former family members: my mother, anyone who has experienced any type of domestic violence. And then I became a dad, then I became a dad again – two girls,” he said.

Court-appointed special advocates give a voice to children who have been separated from their families by the justice system, through no fault of their own, in hopes of bringing them home, if deemed safe. For more information on training, contact Jo Prout at 918-456-8788.

The Tahlequah Arts Council – Cherokee County Arts and Humanities Coalition Inc. – promotes regional arts and artists and strives to enhance economic development and community development through the arts. It hosts arts events – art exhibitions like the traditional Tahlequonia, courses and the Leadership Arts Youth Summer Camp, Arts Under the Stars, on the second Sunday with two speakers with a focus on history and organizations at nonprofit, and the annual Winter Concert on the first Sunday in December. The group also recognizes arts volunteers and arts supporters who make a difference in the community through an annual event.
