Five must-do American bike tours

Forget planes, trains and cars this summer, discover the country by bike. From mountain ranges to black-sand beaches and lush farmland, bike tours combine Lance Armstrong-style peaks with ready-made vacation itineraries (some even include rafting, snorkeling and golf ). We’ve reviewed the nationwide cycling tour pack and picked out five of the best. Check out the full article here on our blog.

Food and wine lovers can combine pedaling and tasting on some of the tours. A six-day walking tour of Oregon’s Willamette Valley takes you through the state’s pinot noir region, where you’ll pass vineyards, then refuel with a wine tasting and dinner from the farm to table. In California wine country, vacationers can take a day trip down country roads, brake to stop at local farms and vineyards, and picnic. And in Vermont, you can pass Holstein cows and visit an iconic farm, complete with cheese samples.

Between biking, bike tours let you see the top sights – one of the tours on our list includes a ride through Yellowstone National Park (including a stop at Old Faithful) – and a Hawaii tour includes views of the lava flowing into the ocean – totally worth the workout. —Caroline Pateck
