Here are some staycation activities for Memorial Day weekend
If you’re planning on staying close to home over the holidays, here’s how you can do it on a budget.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – This Memorial Day weekend, gas prices are skyrocketing and people are looking to save money. If you’re planning on staying close to home over the holidays, here’s how you can do it on a budget.
And if we start the weekend again at Memphis Fire Museum.
“Museum ticket prices are very affordable,” said Kimberly Crafton, executive director of the Fire Museum of Memphis.
Currently, an entire family of four can enter the museum for just $30.
“Children want to see and touch everything. We tried to create a museum where there are exhibits that they just have to look at, but we also have exhibits that they can touch and feel and be a part of,” Crafton said.
Once you’ve had your fire fix, the history lesson can continue down the street at the Slavehaven Underground Railroad Museum.
“It’s a unique story for Memphis and even for the south,” said Elaine Lee Turner, director of the Slavehaven Underground Railroad Museum.
With $12 for adults and $10 for students, a family can tour the 165-year-old property that served as a haven for hundreds of slaves seeking freedom.
“It’s very special because that’s where they sought their freedom. They were housed here by a German immigrant who felt it was his duty to help those in bondage,” Turner said.
Sunday families can plan to stop at metal museum to discover their exhibition in Ghana and much more.

“It really starts at the front door,” said communications manager Jennifer Godwin.
The museum is a self-guided tour that Godwin says is sure to keep kids busy.
“Kids can play bingo and win prizes at the end. It’s really fun for kids to come and see art,” Godwin said.
On Memorial Day Monday, families can wrap up the 3-day weekend with a barbecue picnic in the park at one of the many free parks Memphis has to offer.
