Discovery Rides raises the bar for quality motorcycle tours in Myanmar with fascinating trips on iconic British motorcycle brand, Royal Enfield.

Discovery DMC Managing Director Mika Itavaara is confident that the Royal Enfield motorcycle will create another dimension for the Mandalay tourism scene.

He explains: “Riding a motorcycle removes the wall between the viewer and the world around them. Mandalay is best experienced in the back of a comfortable bike like a Royal Enfield, with a local driver.

The Discovery Rides team have developed several routes led by their expert guides that can be combined with any visit to Mandalay.

In addition to full-day or full-day tour deals, Discovery Rides offers private multi-day trips with Royal Enfields ranging from eight-day trips covering classic Myanmar highlights to 14-day expeditions that explore the ridges and mountains of Chin State. as well as secluded beaches along the palm-fringed Bay of Bengal.

Many international travelers to Myanmar have not heard of – let alone visited – the far reaches of Chin State and Myanmar’s fabulous coastline beyond Ngapali, making them destinations worthy of true adventurers.

Itavaara is passionate about these distant explorations. “It’s the best way to visit many of the most interesting and untouched communities. Traveling by motorbike is profitable, better than taking a jeep and much more energizing. You get better views, more interactions with local communities, and there is virtually no traffic on the roads we carefully selected when planning the routes.

Discovery Rides also offers off-road bike tours.

Royal Enfields are old classic motorcycles originally made in the UK for the British Army in India during WWI and WWII. They are now a collector’s item characterized by a timeless design and ideal toughness for harsh conditions. Royal Enfield Tours has long been popular in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

History of the brand

Royal Enfield was a brand under which The Enfield Cycle Company Limited of Redditch, Worcestershire, UK, sold motorcycles, bicycles, lawn mowers and stationary engines that it had manufactured.

The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901. Enfield Cycle Company is responsible for the design and original production of the Royal Enfield Bullet, the oldest motorcycle design in history.

The remaining Enfield motorcycle business became part of Norton Villiers in 1967 with the business closing in 1978.

In 1955, Enfield Cycle Company joined forces with Madras Motors in India to form Enfield of India, based in Chennai, and began assembling the Royal Enfield Bullet 350cc motorcycle in Madras. The first machines were assembled from components imported from England.

Beginning in 1957, Enfield of India acquired the machinery needed to manufacture components in India, and by 1962 all components were made in India.

Enfield of India continued to produce the “Bullet” and began branding its “Royal Enfield” motorcycles in 1999. A lawsuit concerning the use of “Royal” brought by brand owner David Holder was tried in favor of Enfield of India, which now produces motorcycles under the Royal Enfield name. Models produced and marketed in India include Cafe Racers, Cruisers, Retros and Adventure Tourers.
