Sedona’s Enchantment Resort is an adventure playground for families

Sedona is so hot right now. Arizona’s red rock oasis is thriving, thanks in part to an expanding 300-mile network of trails that wind among the area’s sandstone spiers and labyrinthine canyons. But the destination’s popularity has visitors weaving through narrow streets and scrambling to park at trailheads. There is a fantastic remedy: book a casita at the Enchantment Resort. The resplendent property is nestled in the boulder-lined Boynton Canyon, just steps from the Boynton Canyon trailhead in Sedona. This means you and your family can access miles of slickrock trails and epic views without ever stepping on asphalt. As for the literal heat of Arizona: margaritas are made to order next to each of Enchantment’s three sparkling pools, or enjoy a homemade boozy popsicle like Blue Raspberry with vodka.

As Sedona has become a world-class destination for mountain biking and running, the 218-casita resort has transformed into a family-oriented, luxury adventure basecamp. The centerpiece is the Trail House, a 4,000 square foot facility designed by Gluckman Tang Architects in 2019 that functions as the resort’s adventure hall, housing a sky-lit map room, fire pits for gathering with post-adventure libations and a full-service bike shop. Trail House’s Adventure Advisors—essentially a trail concierge—can direct guests to the best-suited trails based on landscape, skill level, and steepness. They can also book a full range of guided tours from mountain bike training to full moon hikes to the popular Red Rock Photography Tour.

If this all sounds very rugged and grown-up, it doesn’t have to be. Trail House staff organize family-friendly mountain bike sessions at kid-friendly speeds and rides designed to learn about desert dwellers like lizards and cacti. Yoga sessions for all ages, pickleball courts, and a bookable family adventure package that includes guided hikes and hikes are also available. This summer, the Trail House launched its Little Shredders Mountain Bike Camp, a progressive three-day camp open to kids ages 8-15, outfitted with Enchantment’s fleet of 80 premium mountain bikes. Plus, Kids Camp Coyote offers inspiring programming for campers ages 4-12, including scavenger hunts, nature walks and art projects. Full-day sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and include lunch and craft materials. Half-day sessions run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and include a snack. And did we mention the pools?

All of that adventure creates an appetite, and Enchantment’s two separate restaurants offer Southwestern specialties like chicken tinga flautas, jalapeno demi-glazed steak, and prickly pear tile cheesecake. There’s also a market for take-out options for your day hike and poolside dining with delights like brisket burgers, watermelon salad and those adults-only popsicles.

As for accommodations, Southwestern-style casitas range from Pool Suites with private saltwater oases to Hacienda Suites with full kitchens and beehive-shaped fireplaces. Each accommodation has a private viewing deck from which you can watch the sun fade from the canyon walls at the end of a full day of adventures.
