Veterans and first responders invited to enjoy free outdoor activities at Bay City State Park
BAY CITY, MI — A special event will be held this weekend to give veterans and their families the chance to spend time outdoors in Bay County.
The sixth annual Veterans and First Responders Recreation Day event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Bay City State Park. The event is hosted by Congressman Dan Kildee in partnership with State Rep. Timothy Beson and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
During the event, veterans and first responders can join their families in participating in free outdoor activities such as biking, kayaking, fly fishing and spin casting. Local businesses will be on hand to provide recreational equipment and lunch.
Resources for veterans and first responders will be available, including veterans service agents and social workers.
The event is an opportunity to thank veterans and first responders for their service while benefiting their mental health. According to information provided by the Kildee office, studies have shown that recreational therapy such as fishing and kayaking helps relieve symptoms of PTSD.
Participants are encouraged to confirm their attendance online at http://dankildee.house.gov/VetRecDay or by calling 810-238-8627.
